Survey Responses

Many suggestions received through our survey cannot be adopted simply because the data is not available from the crash report form.

For further assistance, we suggest you contact us directly (see About the Data).

We thank everyone for their suggestions and comments! The following table addresses some survey suggestions.

SuggestionResponse
The crash data for buses needs to be a separate category. When counting vehicles, the variable 'Vehicle Style' has several bus categories. Suggest you contact us (see About the Data) for more specific information.
Be able to locate a list of where the crashes occured. GIS information is not available at this time.
ITS deployment statistics with crash data. Those statistics are available at http://www.itsdeployment.its.dot.gov. ITS vehicle solutions are not captured on the crash report form.
How were there 0 crashes in Greenville between 2005-7? Unfortunately, it is not always possible to insert a notice that either scheduled or unscheduled maintenance is underway on some of the servers working behind the scenes for this website. Please contact us (see the About the Data page) if you encounter something like that.
I would love to know of the people who have had injuries and were wearing shoulder belts or lap belts only - How many were people with disabilities. How many were riding from a wheelchair. Count people, not crashes or vehicles. Select two-way table. Select 'Injury Status' and 'Occupant/Motorist Protection' as variables. This will reveal injury by restraint type. Passenger disabilities are not collected on the crash form. Wheelchair is not an item on the crash form; it is possible that a wheelchair would be coded as 'other' in the restraint variable
number of deer vehicle accidents Deer would be covered under the value 'animal' in several places: when counting crashes, the variables 'First Harmful Event' and 'Most Harmful Event'; when counting vehicles, the variables 'Most Harmful Event for vehicle' and the four 'Sequence of Event' variables.
I sometimes need three variables to cross reference. Like, age/seating position/injury status. As well as inputing age instead of groupings and race. Thank you The use of filter variables provides a roundabout way of incorporating a third variable into the mix. Suggest you contact us (see About the Data) for more specific information.
Need animal involved crashes category At the crash level, 'First Harmful Event' and 'Most Harmful Event' indicate animal crashes
You should be able to create tables that include multiple counties at teh same time without having to select and run a table for each county individually. So years X County essentially. There are two regional variables that subdivide counties into groups: NCDOT Division and Highway Patrol Area. Otherwise, the only current solution would be for you to add up the numbers from the individual counties
breakdown by victim age Count people, and select the variable 'Age'
The website is great. A total among the years selected would be useful. It is nice to have them separated, but a total would make it more useful in some instances. At this time, separate years is all we have available.
Technical Difficulties Unfortunately, it is not always possible to insert a notice that either scheduled or unscheduled maintenance is underway on some of the servers working behind the scenes. Thank you for your patience. Feel free to contact us (see the About the Data page) if you encounter these issues.
none - it seems very easy to navigate & offers a wide variety of useful information Thank you!
Define the terms. Does alcohol involvement also include drugs? What if a person were using drugs, but not alcohol and got involved in an accident. Would that be counted under alcohol involvement? Variables are documented in the help section. Run a two-way table, counting vehicles and using the variables 'Alcohol-Involved Vehicle Flag' and 'Driver Alcohol/Drugs Suspected' to see the relationship between these two variables. Absent alcohol, drug involvement is not counted as alcohol involvement.
Include seatbelt usage Seatbelt usage can be found, when counting vehicles or people, as Occupant/Motorist Protection
A glossary of what some of the terms mean. And if there is one, let us know where it is. Very helpful overall, though. Thanks. Please refer to "Help", "Variables Used in the Data" and "How to Use the Form"
could not get any information Unfortunately, it is not always possible to insert a notice that either scheduled or unscheduled maintenance is underway on some of the servers working behind the scenes. Thank you for your patience. Feel free to contact us (see the About the Data page) if you encounter these issues.
The crash data I looked at ran through 2007. Why can''t 2008 data be included? 2008 data have been added to the site
Excellent website! If there''s anyway to include estimated traffic volume for time of day, day of week and location, that would really be helpful in understanding the numbers. Not sure if this is possible though. Unfortunately, traffic volume data is not included with the crash data we obtain for this website.
Great tool to obtain info. Thank you!
Add information on crashes by charge involved. Such as fail to stop for red light. Violations charged as a result of a crash are not included in the crash data. There is a group of 3 variables, Driver Contributing Circumstances 1-3, that contain similar information.
You may have it,but would the road or intersection be available? Unfortunately, we found that including road name variables created prohibitively large tables that caused problems with the web system.
Provide a way to search/sort by gender, ethnicity AND age at the same time. But, even without a third parameter to enter, this is a great tool. Thanks! Given the current system design, one of those variables would need to become a filter, allowing for a two-way table using the remaining variables. We will consider the filter option.
Include Animal related as a search option First Harmful Event and Most Harmful Event include Animal as a variable value when counting crashes. When counting vehicles, Sequence of Events 1-4 along with Most Harmful Event for Vehicle have Animal as a variable value. We will consider adding these as a filter.
have basic statistics for each category already in a table because it is what is usually wanted; creation of tables for specific info is great! Perhaps adding a static table of the most recent year of crash data for each variable could be helpful. We will consider adding this to the site.
Somewhat --- The location of the accident or a link to that info would be very beneficial to help identify problem areas. GIS information is not available at this time.
Give is the crash data with coordinates so we can map them GIS information is not available at this time.
you were not able to give me the number of alcohol and speed involved crashes and with drivers ages 16 to 19 Since we are able to run a table with all three filters, there must have been system problems at the time you made your request. Hopefully, you received the message indicating that there were system problems.
you could not give me any figures for 2008 Since we are able to run a table for 2008 data, there must have been system problems at the time you made your request. Hopefully, you received the message indicating that there were system problems. It appears that you may have experienced the same outage as the previous requestor, since your occurred 2 minutes later.
Make data available by road name Unfortunately, we found that including road name variables created prohibitively large tables that caused problems with the web system.
Further breakdown of cause of MVC Causation is not collected on the crash report form. Perhaps you would be interested in the First or Most Harmful Events in the crash.
I would like to be able to see what accidents occurred that involved 15-passenger vans. I would also like to see what accidents occurred that involved school buses. Are buses and vans lumped together under trucks/large vehicles? Is there any way to separate out the data? Count vehicles, then choose 'Vehicle Style'.
none...really easy to use. Thank you!
I am a State Trooper and I can use this for my Public Safety Talks Wonderful!
Add Cell phone use to the sort. See the Driver Contributing Circumstance variables.
It doesnt provide graphs for anything i need. You should only allow combinations that you have graphs for. You can create graphs after downloading the table results to Excel.
Unfortunately, I find it quite bothersome that ethnicity is misspelled throughout your site. Making such a prominent spelling error makes me question the validity of your data.... That misspelling was stored in a label created long ago. It kept sneaking back in...it *should* be fixed now. Thank you for pointing this out!
unable to connect due to technical difficulties Unfortunately, it is not always possible to insert a notice that either scheduled or unscheduled maintenance is underway on some of the servers working behind the scenes for this website. Please contact us (see the About the Data page) if you encounter something like that.
You need to be able to download this data easily into Excel or txt files. Done!
You should say what the categories mean (i.e. what does ''missing'' mean when you create the table? Please refer to the section about variables on the website. In general, missing means that the reporting officer did not supply a value.
Supply data that is newer than 2008. Data is added to the site as soon as it is available to us.
Would like to be able to select a specific area such as the jurisdiction of a police department which would normally be 1 mile outside of the City''s Limit. Overall a great tool! Will consider adding this flag to use in conjunction with a city subset
does not show anything Unfortunately, it is not always possible to insert a notice that either scheduled or unscheduled maintenance is underway on some of the servers working behind the scenes for this website. Please contact us (see the About the Data page) if you encounter something like that.
I need an explanation of what each access control means. Hopefully, I can search your website for definitions. The DMV-349 Instruction Manual is available on the NCDOT DMV website
Make it easier to find the NC Crash Data website from main page. On the current HSRC website home page, click the "Roadway Design and Traffic Safety" project area. The resulting page includes a link under "Project Web Sites"; alternatively, click the "Websites" tab on the HSRC home page to find the link under "North Carolina Web Sites"
Really, it''s yes and no. I''m looking for crashes related to distracted driving and that wasn''t an option in table creation. However, often times I can find what I am looking for on this site. "driver distracted" is a value found in the Driver Contributing Circumstances variables at the vehicle level
putting more data on a particular search We will consider adding three-way tables
Break down of specific roads We will consider adding three-way tables
looks good! Thank you!
need state and city maintained roads for city crash data. We found that including road name as a variable could create extremely large tables. Please contact Eric Rodgman for these requests.
provide crash report of drivers between the ages of 18 - 64 years old This can be obtained by counting people and running a two-way table of age by person type
distinguish between drug and alcohol collisions Using the "Driver Alcohol/Drugs Suspected" variable in a two-way table at the vehicle level will provide some information. Will consider modifying flags to differentiate.
a map Useful mapping will not be possible until standardized geographic coordinates are collected statewide.
Ran the following report- Number of People in Crashes in 2007, 2008, 2009 Location: Statewide Reportability: Reportable Crashes on State-Maintained Roads Injuries: Crashes with fatalities fatal (K) 3,856 100.0 3,307 100.0 3,070 100.0 10,233 100.0 These fatalities are more than double the one provided on NCDOT Dashboard. https://apps.dot.state.nc.us/dot/dashboard/safer.aspx Your numbers reflect all the people in those crashes, not just the fatalities. Run the table using injury status to get the count of fatals.
I''m looking for data on bicycle accidents in Greensboro, NC. I would love to get actual addresses of accidents in order to do a heat-map to track the location of the most dangerous places for bicycling in the city. I''d look to do for Greensboro, what this man did for Davis, CA: http://vort.org/media/data/crashes.html. If you were able to make that data accessible, it would be extremely helpful. Thanks, Francis Kelly francis.kelly@gmail.com Useful mapping will not be possible until standardized geographic coordinates are collected statewide.
Specific location Useful mapping will not be possible until standardized geographic coordinates are collected statewide.
Make it more specific. Want to know how many teens killed. Not the number of people in the wrecks. A table of age by injury would reveal that information.
it was useful, but something about it just didnt flow well for me. hard to figure out ways to combine data. This is a complex offering to the public. Any suggestions about navigational flow that would help users would be appreciated.
Make it easier to find on the internet. A general search does not bring up the site. We're looking into that - thanks for the suggestion! If you search for 'North Carolina Crash Data' or 'NC crash data' our site is the 1st, 2nd and 3rd listing in Google, and 1st or 2nd in Bing. Could you please respond to the survey again with your search terms?
I''d like to see data pertaining to red light cameras and crashes at intersections with them Since there is no data item on the crash report form relating to red-light cameras, we are unable to help with that.
Add accidents that were caused because of text messaging The current crash report form does not have a value for driver contributing circumstances related to text messaging. That value is likely to be included in a future version of the crash report form. Once it is available in the data, tables can be generated using the value.
It''s pretty good as is! Thank you!
searchability by highway and mile marker or between junctions. This would be a complex addition to the website. We will discuss the possibility.
I wanted all counties and I only got Alamance. It is pretty difficult to use! If you want data for all counties, please run a statewide query. By choosing county as one of the variables in a two-way table, you will see the breakdown across counties.
Output data on the individual record level - not as aggregate data. jamessdixon@gmail.com This site is intended to allow users to explore aggregated crash data.
Well done, thank you. Thank you!!
needs better search engine. Took me a long time to find the teenage driving statistics. If you have difficulty finding your way when using the site, please call one of the numbers shown on the 'About the Data' page.
The ability to find crash statistics for a specific location ie. intersections Unfortunately, the scope of the project does not include querying at such a granular level.
Include animals in the filtering process. There is a code for collision with animal. At the crash level, it can be found in First Harmful Event and Most Harmful Event. At the vehicle level, it can be found in Most Harmful Event for Vehicle, and in the four Sequence of Event variables.
I would like to be able to select all counties. Thank you If you want data for all counties, please run a statewide query. By choosing county as one of the variables in a two-way table, you will see the breakdown across counties.
Ethnicity is spelled wrong in the tables Thank you for pointing this out!
Need 2010 data We will add the 2010 data as soon as we receive the data. The web site update is likely to occur in September.
Awesome site and I LOVE YOUR RETRO GRAPHICS! Cute, useful. Site had exactly what I was looking for. Thank you so much!
Ideally, if the site could be refined to become route specific would be great. Good general info. We will consider adding route as a filtering variable.
The ability to download raw data sets would be incredibly useful for those who have access to various statistical and database softwares. This site is intended to allow users to explore aggregated crash data.
Include additional age, gender and race variables. A great resource! What additional gender and race variables would be helpful?
I need 2010 data 2010 data was held up at DOT this year and not delivered in late summer as in years past.
Great table tool and variables. Great having breakdowns by county, city, etc. Was looking for crashes involving animals, specifically deer, so did not find that. Identifying deer crashes involves delving into the crash narrative. We will consider adding this as a flag.
To be able to have the report generate the road names or SR numbers. We will consider adding them as a row variable for city or county queries.
I would like the option to download the RAW data, so I can make my own tables and sorts. This site is intended to allow users to explore aggregated crash data.
2010 numbers and I need unrestraint fatalities 2010 data is now available. Please run a table of Occupant/Motorist protection by injury status. The variables are available when counting people.
How to obtain further access to this data This site is intended to allow users to explore aggregated crash data.
links aren''t always self-evident. Underlining says to me, this is a link. Will discuss this issue with the design folks.
I would like to query by route number. We will discuss this request.
more frequent updates; smaller geographic scale (e.g., corridor and intersection queries) Currently, we update annually. We will discuss this request.
I would like to see an option to chart the data and to select a chart type for the data. We will look into the feasibility of doing so.
excellent web site Thank you!
Would be helpful if the road on which the accident occured was indicated, such as I-85 This site is intended to allow users to explore aggregated crash data.
I need to see data listings by street name This site is intended to allow users to explore aggregated crash data.
I need the data for city streets, too City streets are not omitted from the data.
Wish I could download as an excel or such file. We will look into the feasibility of doing so.
Wish I could download as an excel or such file. AND THAT ANSWERING THESE QUESTIONS DIDN''T MAKE MY DATA DISAPPEAR FROM THE SCREEN! Apologies - the survey now opens in a new tab or window!
What does PDO stand for? Property Damage Only
Would love to get more timely data. This data is 3 years old. We receive data from DOT annually, processing it as quickly as we can for use on the website.
I think it awesome. What about graphs? You can generate graphs in Excel with downloaded tables.
Add 2010 data to the query system. Done!
wanted data on specific intersection We have found that roadway variables create prohibitively large datasets. Please contact us for help with this - see About the Data.
Not enough detail on vehicle configuration (in particular, in the truck and passenger carrying vehicle category). Need meta data (e.g, what is defined as a ''large truck'' (e.g,. greater than 10,000 lbs GVWR? SUTs and CUTs? or only CUTs?) Vehicle styles are taken from the crash report form. The large truck or bus is defined under Help/Variables used in the data. The definition is: Large Truck/Bus Vehicle Flag ? Indicates whether or not the unit is a commercial bus or a truck with six or more tires (except truck/tractor without trailer.)
I cannont print this table onto one page. Perhaps once the Excel download is in place you can shrink the table to fit on one page.
explain thechoices better. Clicking the question mark icon next to each question links to an explanation.
Having a Print option Will discuss with our design group.
List the county by rate Choose 'Statewide' and then select 'County' as the variable. Select 'descending frequency'. This will reveal the rank of raw crash numbers. A two way table cannot be listed in descending frequency order. Filters can, however, be applied.
It would be great to have data back to the 80''s or even earlier. Many variable values as well as variables have changed over the years as the crash report form has been redesigned repeatedly. Adding the older data would be a difficult undertaking!
I would like to see crash data and injuries by location. Example Hwy 301 and Roslin Farm Rd. We do not include roadway names, as the resulting tables are prohibitively large.
Identify crashes on particular roads. Roadway variables generate prohibitively large tables.
Be very nice if you could break down data specific to a particular NC Road, US Road, or Interstate This is a recurring request. May only be possible for smaller geographic subsets.
None. This is an excellent resource. Thank you!
Great resource! It would be wonderful to be able to download data to Excel, so we can more easily utilize the statistics in papers and grant applications. When will the 2010 data be available? Addition of a download to Excel is imminent.
It does not report crashes that occurr on university campuses You are correct - that information is not a data item on the crash report form.
2011 Data We have not yet received the 2011 data.
Offer explanations as to how the tables are set up, i.e. what is the difference between two-side and one-side and how you can use the data in different ways, especially if you want more ley people to use the website. Love it elsewise! Thanks! This is documented in Help/How to Use the Form
Data by months 'Month of Crash' is a variable available for request in all tables.
Please provide locational information...either decimal degrees or a link to a shapefile download. Locational information is not available to us. Also, this site is intended to allow users to explore aggregated crash data rather than looking at individual crashes.
update data The 2011 data will be forthcoming earlier this year than in past years. The data is currently under review.
include drug impaired stats and variables See the variable "Driver Alcohol/Drugs Suspected" at the vehicle- and person-level table requests.
No data returned for any crash in Lincoln County in 2009 We are unable to duplicate your problem. It is, however, possible to filter the results down to 0. For example, selecting the filters "Alcohol Involvement" and "Bicycle" together yield no crashes in Lincoln County in 2009.
Would just like to see each incident detail, date, and location (i.e. NC 68 @ W. Harrell Rd, NC 68 @ Linville Road, etc.) We do not include roadway names, as the resulting tables are prohibitively large.
Make it easier to find data by county If you choose 'County' as the geographic filter, you can run a table the will only return results for the chosen county. If you choose 'County' as a variable in a two-way table, you will see a cross-tabulation containing results for every county.
tried to create table and it did not work Please contact one of the people on the 'About the Data' page. We are happy to help.
Somewhat, but I am looking for crash data specific to certain well traveled highways. Perhaps I am not using the website correctly. We removed the road as an available variable because the tables returned had the potential to be huge. Please contact one of the people on the 'About the Data' page for help with that sort of table.
A full data download would be great for researchers. Sorry, but this site is intended to provide aggregate information to users.
Crash data by arterial/thoroughfare We removed the road as an available variable because the tables returned had the potential to be huge. Please contact one of the people on the 'About the Data' page for help with that sort of table.
What is meant by ''no access control'', ''full access control'', ''partial access control'' in my table result? The degree of access to a roadway as controlled by public authority. An interstate has full access control. See the 'Help' page.
more links Sorry, do not understand the question/request. Please elaborate.
Add a variable to track distracted drivers and drivers using a cell phone at the time. The numbers are increasing in both categories that are causing accidents. This data is from the NC Crash Report Form. There is no variable that captures 'cell phone use'. Perhaps when the form is revised, this information will be captured and then available to you.
i think its a great approach to open data and the graphics are awesome Thank you!!
Need questions with regards what areas of the county and intersections or roadways Area of the county is not information that is collected in a crash report. We removed the road as an available variable because the tables returned had the potential to be huge. Please contact one of the people on the 'About the Data' page for help with that sort of table.
i am looking for information by vehicle make/model Make and model are not variables we include in the data. Please contact one of the people on the 'About the Data' page for help with that sort of table.
Ages of pedestrians struck Count people, select two-way table, and select person type and person age for the variables. You may want to query the pedestrian data at this website: PBCAT. We also maintain the data for that website.
easy to use. That's very nice to hear!
include a route number or road number filter We removed the road as an available variable because the tables returned had the potential to be huge. Please contact one of the people on the 'About the Data' page for help with that sort of table.
I am attempting to put together a presentation for muy chief to start a DWI Task Force. It would be nice to have 2012 stats and also have the system updated more frequently. We incorporate each new year of data as quickly as we can upon receipt!
This site showed no cases, when in fact there were motor vehicle collision in each of the three years selected Please contact one of the people on the 'About the Data' page. We are happy to help.
More up to date information. We incorporate each new year of data as quickly as we can upon receipt!
One of the sentences is not finished. Could you add some feed back on access control and other defined meaning? Definitions from the DMV349 instruction manual have been added to the access control definitions. What sentence is not finished?
You have a spelling error on the thank you page Yuor submission has been recorded thank you for providing your feedback! Thank yuo ;-) - corrected!
Your website, because it is simple and more restrictive than FARS, is much easier to use and navigate. It would be nice to have the option to see some sort of rates calculated as an example with an explanation as to why you chose to use that denominator As you imply, the denominator choice is a tricky one. By providing only numerators, we are allowing you to decide what rate comes closest to being meaningful.
would be nice to be able to break it down further, especially in the case of larger cities. Some form of city subset is not information that is collected in a crash report. Please contact one of the people on the 'About the Data' page for help with that sort of table.
map Useful mapping will not be possible until standardized geographic coordinates are collected statewide.
Does not include military, police or EMS vehicles That information is found, when counting vehicles or people, in the variable Vehicle Style.
need raw data This site is intended to allow users to explore aggregated crash data. Our data agreement does not allow us to distribute record-level information.
Mismatch from crash rates published by NCDOT Traffic Safety Unit. We are provided with a snapshot of the live crash database. NCDOT TSU uses a live database, and tends to publish after our snapshot is taken, hence the minor differences. See About the Data to contact us for further information on this issue.
SQL Access to raw data tables would be helpful. This site is intended to allow users to explore aggregated crash data. Our data agreement does not allow us to distribute record-level information.
very useful Thank you!
May need to be able to extract data based on location with all variables populated into the attribute table (excel sheet) This site is intended to allow users to explore aggregated crash data. Our data agreement does not allow us to distribute record-level information.
I was looking for more of a division of data in one table so that I could compare rural vs nonrural, teen vs not, etc. There''s no real opportunity for comparison. Actually, there is the ability to compare groups within a table if you choose 'multiway' as your table type. Please contact us if you have trouble doing so (see About the Data)
Not sure if the source data is available but that would be helpful. I am doing research for a healthcare/healthy lifestyle code camp and the sopurce data would helpful. Lete me know at chris.mathews@wakegov.com This site is intended to allow users to explore aggregated crash data. Our data agreement does not allow us to distribute record-level information.
It is awesome! Thank you for making it so easy to do research! Thank you!
have the export to excel button on the page that says thanks for taking the survey The thank you page now opens in a new window - move to the table window to download to excel, please.
Mopeds To find mopeds, count vehicles or people, and choose the variable Vehicle Style.
Need a specific road This site is intended to allow users to explore aggregated crash data. Our data agreement does not allow us to distribute record-level information.
to include ages 16-20 years old This can be found under Count Crashes in the Data Filter section
Please include 16 - 20 years old to keep track of underage drinking and driving. This can be found by counting vehicles, selecting Driver age 16-19 in the Data Filter section, and selecting Driver Alcohol/Drugs Test Results as a row variable.
Great reference Thank you!
